Not Sure About All the Hat Terminology on Our Site?

No worries! Below are some common terms you might come across while browsing our awesome hats. And remember, we're always here to help... except on weekends. You’re on your own then!

Panels: Most of the caps on our site have either 5 or 6 panels. A 6-panel hat will have a seam down the front center, while a 5-panel cap is perfect for embroidery. But don’t worry—a well-embroidered 6-panel cap will cover that middle seam with ease.

Crown: This refers to the front panels (usually two, or sometimes just one) of the cap.

Buckram: You’ll find a stiff buckram lining inside the crown of ‘constructed’ hats. It helps the front of the cap stand up straight on its own.

Constructed/Structured: These caps have that stiff buckram lining, giving them a solid, structured shape.

Unconstructed/Unstructured: These hats don’t have the buckram lining, so they need your head to give them support and keep them upright. They’re a little more relaxed!

Button: That little button at the top of the hat that holds the panels together. (You knew that one already, didn’t you?)

Eyelets: Small holes that are embroidered into the hat to let your head breathe. These are usually made of metal or reinforced stitching.

Brim: The brim, bill, or visor of the hat is typically made from plastic and covered with fabric, such as canvas, brushed cotton, wool, denim, or suede. It’s your best friend for sun protection! The brim is sewn down with neat rows of stitching. Some brims come pre-curved, while others are flat, so you can give it the curve you want.

Under-Visor: The underside of the brim. Sometimes it’s a different color fabric than the top. On some hats, you’ll see a contrasting color or piping along the edge of the brim.

Panel Seams (Stitching): This refers to the stitching that connects the panels. Sometimes it’s the same color, but other times it’s a different color for a cool pop of contrast!

Washed vs. Unwashed Cotton: Washed cotton hats are softer and usually have a more muted, duller look, while unwashed cotton hats are brighter and have a smoother finish. If you're going for a more eco-friendly option, bio-washing is a natural, gentle way to wash the fabric without damaging its color or texture.

Non-Pill Fleece: You know those annoying little fabric balls that pop up on your fleece after some use? That’s called pilling. With non-pill fleece, you won’t have to worry about picking them off—it stays smooth!
